21:080:121 Introduction to Drawing (3)
Basic studio course to develop skills in representational drawing; trains students in the perception of real-world form and space and the transfer of that perception into two-dimensional images; experience in drawing still life, land- and cityscapes, and the figure; materials include pencil, conté crayon, and other drawing media.
Open to nonmajors. No previous art experience needed.

21:080:223 Figure Drawing (3)
Drawing from the figure using a variety of approaches ranging from the analytical and precise to the gestural and expressive; familiarity with the complexities of line, value, and texture, and with the various media approaches gained while drawing from life; materials include pencil, conté crayon, and other drawing media.

21:080:251 Introduction to Painting (3)
Studio course introducing the fundamental concepts of painting; various materials and approaches, both abstract and representational, used to deal with form and image.

21:080:261 Introduction to Photography (3)
Introduces the fundamental principles of photography through directed projects with digital cameras. The focus is on the medium of photography as a means of visual thinking and creativity.  Experimentation with a broad range of approaches to photography will be covered using structured assignments and demonstrations. The student will gain a practical and conceptual foundation in the field of photography as a language of communication and expression.

21:080:273 Introduction to Printmaking (3)
Studio introduction to printmaking, covering the techniques of screenprint, linocut, woodcut, monoprint, collograph, and digital applications. Emphasis on developing visual vocabulary and effective forms; history and contemporary roles of printmaking. Field trips.

21:080:285 Seminar in Contemporary Art I (3)
With a focus on “Big Ideas” impacting the contemporary artist, this course widens theoretical and historical perspectives as it relates to modern movements, socioeconomic institutions, and ideologies impacting communities. Through a combination of research, writing, artmaking, and field trips to cultural venues, this course tackles challenging topics of the day with care and openness. This course fulfills a writing intensive requirement for the Fine Art Program.

21:080:305 Problems in Art (3)
This course, typically offered in the Spring semester, is in conjunction with Problems in Contemporary  Art (21:080:405), offered in the Fall semester. This course takes a deeper dive into Express Newark’s artist-in-residence’s locally engaged community-based project. Students will continuing to hone and expand their own work as their develop their artistic practices

21:080:355 Painting and Drawing Workshop (3)
Studio course using wet and dry media. Introduction to the watercolor medium, collage techniques, and mixed media methods. These processes, as well as traditional oil painting and drawing techniques, are used to explore themes and concepts in the work.

21:080:361 Studio Photography (3)
Good portraiture develops from a dynamic relationship between the photographer and the subject. In SHINE Portrait Studio, a cutting-edge professional studio at Express Newark, this class examines different cameras, including the smartphone, while pulling inspiration from portraiture engaging with communities, and contemporary photographers working in this genre. Through hands-on assignments, students will learn fundamental elements of photography while also working with professional lighting and other studio equipment.

21:080:362 Photography Workshop (3)
This course explores "Street Photography," a genre of photography that records everyday life in a public place. Street photographers prefer to isolate and capture moments which might otherwise go unnoticed. Today with the accessibility of smartphone cameras, and compact SLR’s, there are more diverse narratives and experiences of life in public spaces that can be created. This class involves students being outside, in public spaces, focusing on slowing down, wandering, observing, discovering and learning to see and embracing "stream of consciousness".

21:080:391,392 Individual Study in Studio (BA,BA)
Special problems in original creative work. Independent studio work in any of the disciplines offered.
Prerequisites: Permission of instructor.

21:080:393,394 Internship in Art (3,3)
Opportunity to explore career experience in art and design; limited to students with highly developed skills. Placements, designed to ensure maximum benefit to the student, may be in graphic design studios as apprentices to artists or in arts management positions. Under departmental supervision.

21:080:405 Problems in Contemporary Art (3)
Examination of significant ideas and problems in contemporary painting, sculpture, and multimedia; emphasis on the current scene.
